J. Wendell Johnson Award - Stage Design
J. Wendell Johnson graduated from Superior State Teacher’s College in 1932. He moved
to Palo Alto to attend Stanford University for his graduate work and then eventually
earned his Master’s Degree at the University of Minnesota in 1936. Johnson was hired
at San José State Teachers College in 1937 and taught Play Production and Stage Design.
The J. Wendell Johnson Design Competition was established in 1952 and is given as Award for Excellence in Design for the Stage.
