Dr. James Lee joined SJSU's faculty in 2005. His service as an Academic Senator and department chair were instrumental at preparing him for his current role in Faculty Services. The Faculty Services team administers appointments and evaluations of all faculty and Academic Student Employees, and it promotes adherence to CSU and SJSU Policies and the Collective Bargaining Agreements pertaining to these academic personnel. The critical mission of Faculty Services is to support the faculty lifecycle, recruitment through retirement, with an informed, human touch. As AVP, James works with Academic Affairs and other SJSU division leaders to achieve Transformation 2030 outcomes, including utilizing technologies to improve services; diversifying and retaining our talented faculty; removing bureaucratic barriers to faculty/student engagement; supporting equitable review, promotion, and compensation practices; and thoughtful stewarding of resources. In his free time, James enjoys things he’s not particularly good at, including gardening, home projects, and keeping up with the adventures of his partner Daniel and their loony cats Dizzy and Fizzy.

Associate Vice President, Employee and Labor Relations

Julie joined SJSU in May 2012 in the Human Resources Department as the Equal Opportunity Manager. In 2013, she was promoted to Director, adding Employee/Labor Relations to her team. With the Faculty Affairs and Human Resources merger, Julie manages the Employee/Labor Relations of University Personnel. These units ensure compliance with collective bargaining agreements and policies and are responsible for investigating complaints, providing guidance to campuswide leadership related to performance and conduct-related issues for faculty and staff. Additionally, Julie oversees the Employment Authorization and Immigration unit reporting to Christie Martinez, Manager. When not at the University Julie enjoys a wide variety of activities including live music, festivals, travel and good laughs!!

Terryn Ashley | 408-924-1708
Terryn worked at SJSU from 1999-2001 in the Police Department and Payroll. She returned in 2022 after spending 20 years at CSU Monterey Bay. Her background working in a department, systems support, and central HR gives her a unique perspective focused on excellent customer service, streamlined processes, and a drive for 100% accuracy. Terryn manages the day-to-day operations of the Payroll, Employee Support Services, Unemployment, and the Fee Waiver Program. When not working, Terryn enjoys spending time outdoors with her three dogs.
